Louis and Gloria Flanzer Club

Shape blue

Our Louis and Gloria Flanzer Boys & Girls Club is our sixth Club location and first site situated in DeSoto County. After meeting with city officials and community partners, we opened the Club in 2018 to serve 75 children. In 2019, the City of Arcadia transferred the lease of the Smith-Brown Recreation Center, which is located next to the current Club site. With lead support from the Louis and Gloria Flanzer Philanthropic Trust, we are currently transforming the structure into a multi-purpose gymnasium for youth with designated space for physical activities, project-based learning and enrichment programs that further fosters their personal development. We will also add another 10,000 square feet to the facility for additional youth development programs. We anticipate the project will be completed in 2023, and we look forward to providing even greater opportunities to more youth in Arcadia. The Florida Department of Education designated the site a 21st Century Community Learning Center, serving students from Memorial Elementary School, Nocatee Elementary School, West Elementary School and DeSoto Middle School.

21st Century Community Learning Centers Program

Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties' 21st Century Community Learning Centers offer academic, artistic, and cultural enrichment opportunities to students and their families when school is not in session. Our programs nourish the mind as well as the body. We provide healthy snacks and warm inviting places conducive to opening the mind to the possibilities available through learning. Our centers provide students with a broad array of other activities - such as drug and violence prevention, counseling, art, music, recreation, technology, and character education programs. Our programs serve the families of participating students, by identifying the literacy needs of individual families and matching them with the appropriate program. Our goal is to provide opportunities for academic enrichment, including tutorial services to help students, particularly students who attend low-performing schools, to meet state academic standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and mathematics. This program serves students from Memorial Elementary School, Nocatee Elementary School, West Elementary School and DeSoto Middle School.
