Harvey is a 7-year-old in the 2nd grade at Tuttle Elementary School. He captures the hearts of everyone around him with his electric personality, wild imagination and quick wit.
He started coming to the Boys & Girls Club last year, and can typically be found chasing his best Club friend, Miles, on the outdoor playground or playing educational games in the Club's computer lab.
"My all-time favorite thing to do at the Boys & Girls Club is play Prodigy on the computer," Harvey says.
Prodigy is math homework disguised as a video game. The online program challenges children to correctly solve equations while mastering skills and improving grades along the way.
"Every time I get enough adding or subtracting questions right, I get to go up a level!" he says with his eyes gleaming. "I'm on Level 57 now, but I want to get to Level 1,000 some day!"
But before Harvey can play games like Prodigy, he finishes all of his homework with Club staff member Ms. Mikeelee and works on i-Ready.
i-Ready is an individualized learning system that teachers across Sarasota County integrate into their kindergarten through eighth grade classrooms. This program helps Harvey practice what he learned in school and sharpen his reading and math skills.
"I love math, art and technology the most," he said. "I even got all A's on my report card and I made the Principal's List!"
Harvey hopes to get perfect attendance this semester.
"I want my parents to be proud of me. When I grow up, I can see myself being a mechanical engineer or something secret," he says, smiling ear to ear. "Ok, fine. I'll tell you the secret. I want to be Spiderman."
Harvey is one of many Club members discovering their potential inside the Boys & Girls Club. With caring adult mentors at his side and critical resources at his fingertips, Harvey can set his sights on achieving his goals, both now and in the future.
