Jorge Hernandez-Perez, a teen at our Lee Wetherington Boys & Girls Club, won our organization’s Youth of the Year title in February. In April, Jorge went on to win the Florida State Youth of the Year competition. In June, he competed for and won the Boys & Girls Clubs Southeast Regional Youth of the Year Award. In addition to over $20,000 in college scholarship money, Jorge will represent the entire Southeast Region of Boys & Girls Club members for the next year. Jorge is currently studying Neuroscience at Columbia University.

Continued the capital initiative at our Louis and Gloria Flanzer Boys & Girls Club in Arcadia to renovate and expand the on-site gymnasium and turn it into additional learning and multi-use space. In 2021, we held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Phase II of the project, which was the completion of the Peace River Citrus Products, Inc. Health & Fitness Center. The project also entered Phase III, which is the expansion of the Club that will provide an additional 10,000 sq. ft. of educational and enrichment space to increase both capacity and impact.

Launched a capital project at our Irving & Marilyn Naiditch Campus, home of the Roy McBean Boys & Girls Club, which, when completed, will be a state-of-the-art, cradle-to-career site for the Newtown Community that will include early learning space, classrooms, enrichment areas, cafeteria, technology lab, dedicated teen space, vocational training center, commercial teaching kitchen and much, much more.

Began construction on the expansion of the Lee Wetherington Trade Partners Administrative Building. This expansion will provide modern meeting spaces, a collaborative work environment and will support organizational growth and capacity building. With additional space for key staff to oversee strategic initiatives, our organization will be primed to empower future generations of local youth to chart their path to success.

Program Partners

Easterseals of Southwest Florida began operating their programming out of our Lee Wetherington Club during the day when the Club is not in use. Easterseals participants not only use the space during the day but have access to the Boys & Girls Club programming after-school.

Newtown Connection, founded by MLB player Ian Desmond and co-founder Vince Northfield, provided programming to instill the values of health, nutrition and education to Club members attending our Newtown Estates Park Boys & Girls Club.

The Florida Center for Early Childhood began providing mental health services, through a strategic partnership with Community Foundation of Sarasota County, to our Roy McBean Boys & Girls Club members to help them reach their full potential.

Take Stock in Children of Sarasota continued providing opportunities for teens to access post-secondary funding
and mentorship.
