1. What is the 2021 Summer Program?

The 2021 Summer Program provides youth, ages 6 to 18, with access to positive adult mentors and opportunities that encourage academic excellence, leadership development, healthy habits and success after high school graduation. The Summer Program features a comprehensive slate of exciting activities including daily education, art demonstrations, physical fitness activities, technology instruction, career exploration and more. Meals are also provided. The program operates in accordance with the highest safety standards set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local health officials to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

2. When is the 2021 Summer Program?

The 2021 Summer Program will run for six weeks at all Boys & Girls Clubs locations. The program will take place Monday through Friday from June 14 to July 30 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. All Boys & Girls Clubs will be closed July 5 to 9.

3. What are the eligibility requirements for the program participants?

The 2021 Summer Program serves youth between the ages of 6 and 18. Space is extremely limited. Youth between the ages of 6 and 12 must qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. All teenagers, ages 13 to 18, regardless of household income, can apply.

4. Where will the 2021 Summer Program take place?

The 2021 Summer Program will serve youth, ages 6 to 18, at six Boys & Girls Club locations including:

  • Gene Matthews Boys & Girls Club at 6851 S. Biscayne Dr. North Port, FL 34287
  • Lee Wetherington Boys & Girls Club at 3100 Fruitville Rd. Sarasota, FL 34237
  • Louis and Gloria Flanzer Boys & Girls Club at 18 School Ave. Arcadia, FL 34266
  • Newtown Estates Park Boys & Girls Club at 2800 Newtown Blvd. Sarasota, FL 34234
  • Robert and Joan Lee Boys & Girls Club at 920 Gulf Coast Blvd. Venice, FL 34285
  • Roy McBean Boys & Girls Club at 1790 21st St. Sarasota, FL 34234

5. What are the program’s safety protocols?

The safety of our Club members’ and staff is our top priority. As the organization continues to monitor the evolving pandemic, Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties has designed the 2021 Summer Program in accordance with the health and safety protocols set forth by federal and local officials including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Florida Department of Health. As a result, the Clubs must:

  • Limit the number of participants by adhering to a 1:18 staff-to-member ratio;
  • Require masks to be worn by staff and members;
  • Follow social distancing recommendations;
  • Mandate temperature checks upon arrival; and
  • Increase daily cleaning and sanitizing efforts.

6. What are the Club membership fees for the 2021 Summer Program?

Club membership fees for the 2021 Summer Program vary by Club location:

  • Lee Wetherington Boys & Girls Club at 3100 Fruitville Rd. Sarasota, FL 34237
    • $240 ($40/week)

Scholarships are available for Club memberships and can be explored after program admittance with Club staff.

Please note, fees will not be due until Club membership is granted. Payments must be processed online at least one week in advance at bgcsdc.org under the “Our Clubs” tab.

7. What meals are included with the Club membership for the 2021 Summer Program?

Food is provided at all Club locations. More information can be found here in the chart.

8. What is your attendance policy?

Daily attendance is required only for children between the ages of 6 and 12, unless due to illness or other extenuating circumstances. Absences extended beyond 3 days will be reviewed by the Club Director and may result in termination of Club membership.

9. How do I apply for my child to attend the 2021 Summer Program?

Applications for the 2021 Summer Program will open on Monday, March 1, at bgcsdc.org. Guardians of children between the ages of 6 and 12 must be prepared to upload proof of free or reduced-price status. The strict deadline to apply is Friday, April 30. All registration requests will be placed onto a wait list and reviewed in the order in which they are received. Parents and/or teens will be notified within 48-72 hours after receipt of your request to confirm whether Club membership has been granted or not. Please do not call the Club until this time has passed.

10. Are any other specialized programs available this summer?

Yes!Boys & Girls Clubs will also provide exploratory summer programs to a limited number of teens including academic enrichment, entrepreneurial training, leadership development, financial literacy, civic engagement and workforce development. Middle and high school students are invited to secure their spot at theclubsdc.org. Applications for specialized programs will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
